From Fight-or-Flight to Calm: How Acupuncture Helps Reset the Nervous System

Supporting the Body Back Into Balance

Many people who come to my clinic say something similar:

“I feel like my body can’t switch off.”

They might feel constantly on edge, unable to fully relax, or like their mind and body are always preparing for something. Even when everything in their life seems relatively calm, their body still feels stuck in stress.

Very often, what they’re experiencing is a nervous system that has become stuck in survival mode.

Acupuncture can be an incredibly powerful way to help the body gently return to balance.

When the Nervous System Gets Stuck

The nervous system has two main modes of operation.

The sympathetic nervous system, often known as fight-or-flight, prepares the body to respond to danger or stress. Heart rate increases, breathing becomes shallow, muscles tighten and stress hormones are released.

The parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes called rest-and-repair (or rest-and-digest), allows the body to slow down, digest food, repair tissues and restore energy.

In a healthy system, the body moves naturally between these two states depending on what is happening around us.

But when stress becomes chronic, the nervous system can become locked in a heightened state of alertness. This might happen after long periods of stress, illness, trauma, burnout or anxiety. Over time, the body can begin to lose its ability to fully relax.

Signs Your Nervous System May Be Stuck in Fight-or-Flight

From Fight-or-Flight to Calm: How Acupuncture Helps Reset the Nervous System

A dysregulated nervous system can show up in many different ways.

You might recognise some of these symptoms:

• feeling constantly on edge or hyper-alert

• anxiety or sudden waves of panic

• tightness in the chest or shallow breathing

• heart palpitations

• difficulty relaxing, even when you’re tired

• waking during the night with racing thoughts

• digestive issues such as bloating or nausea

• tension in the shoulders, neck or jaw

• feeling exhausted but unable to fully rest

• brain fog or poor concentration

When these symptoms appear together, they are often signs that the nervous system needs support returning to balance.

How Acupuncture Works with the Nervous System

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body that communicate with the brain and nervous system. These points activate complex networks of nerves, connective tissue and circulation. When acupuncture needles are gently placed into these points, several physiological responses can occur.

Research has shown acupuncture may help:

• regulate the autonomic nervous system

• reduce levels of stress hormones such as cortisol

• improve circulation

• release muscle tension

• promote relaxation

• support emotional regulation

In simple terms, acupuncture sends signals to the body that it is safe to relax.

Many people notice this shift during treatment.

Breathing slows. The body feels heavier and more grounded. The mind becomes quieter.

This is often the nervous system beginning to move out of fight-or-flight and back into rest-and-repair.

The Chinese Medicine Perspective

Traditional Chinese Medicine has understood this process for thousands of years, although it describes it using different language.

Rather than focusing solely on the nervous system, Chinese medicine looks at the flow of Qi (vital energy) throughout the body.

When Qi flows smoothly, the body and mind feel balanced.

But stress, emotional strain, poor sleep and lifestyle pressures can cause Qi to become stagnant or depleted. This can lead to symptoms such as:

• anxiety

• irritability

• insomnia

• digestive disturbances

• fatigue

• emotional overwhelm

Acupuncture helps restore the smooth flow of Qi, supporting both physical and emotional balance.

A Whole-Body Approach

From Fight-or-Flight to Calm: How Acupuncture Helps Reset the Nervous System

One of the reasons acupuncture can be so effective is that it treats the whole system, not just individual symptoms.

For example, someone experiencing nervous system dysregulation may also experience:

• digestive issues

• poor sleep

• headaches or muscle tension

• hormonal imbalance

• fatigue

These symptoms are often connected through the nervous system. By supporting the body’s internal balance, acupuncture can help regulate multiple systems at once.

Resetting the Nervous System Takes Time

The nervous system learns patterns. If it has been in a heightened stress state for months or years, it may take time for the body to fully relearn how to relax.

This is why acupuncture treatments often work best when done as a series, allowing the body to gradually build new patterns of regulation.

Over time many people notice:

• deeper sleep

• calmer breathing

• improved digestion

• greater emotional stability

• increased resilience to stress

Healing is rarely about forcing the body to relax. It is about supporting the body until relaxation becomes possible again.

Acupressure Points You Can Try at Home to Support Nervous System Regulation

Alongside acupuncture treatments, I often show patients simple acupressure techniques they can use at home to help regulate the nervous system.

When the body feels stuck in stress or overwhelm, gently stimulating certain acupuncture points can help encourage the body to move out of fight-or-flight and back toward rest-and-repair. Here are a few gentle points you can try.

Yintang: The Calming Point

Located between the eyebrows.

Yintang is traditionally used to settle the mind and calm the nervous system. It is one of the most well-known points for promoting relaxation and easing mental tension.

You can gently press or massage this point while taking slow, steady breaths for one to two minutes.

Many people notice their mind beginning to quiet and their breathing naturally slowing.

Pericardium 6 (Neiguan)

This point is located about three finger-widths down from the wrist crease on the inside of the forearm.

Pericardium 6 is commonly used in acupuncture to support nervous system regulation and ease stress-related symptoms.

It can be particularly helpful for:

• feelings of anxiety or nervousness

• chest tightness or shallow breathing

• nausea linked to stress

• moments when the body feels overwhelmed

Apply gentle pressure with your thumb and hold the point for around one minute while breathing slowly.

Heart 7 (Shenmen)

Heart 7 sits on the wrist crease on the little finger side of the wrist.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this point helps calm the Shen, often translated as the mind or spirit.

It is frequently used to support:

• nervous system regulation

• emotional steadiness

• sleep difficulties

• restlessness or agitation

Massage the point gently in small circular movements for one to two minutes.

These simple techniques can be helpful tools when the nervous system feels activated.

However, they work best alongside personalised acupuncture treatment that addresses the underlying pattern of imbalance in the body.

Why Personalised Treatment Matters

One of the key principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine is that two people with the same symptoms may require very different treatments.

For example, one person’s nervous system dysregulation may be linked to Liver Qi stagnation from prolonged stress, while another may need support strengthening digestion and energy through the Spleen system.

Others may benefit from treatments that anchor the Heart Shen and calm the mind, or from supporting Kidney energy when long-term stress has depleted the body’s deeper reserves.

Because acupuncture works with the body’s individual patterns, treatment is always tailored to the person in front of me.

This personalised approach is one of the reasons acupuncture can be so effective in helping the body restore balance and regulate the nervous system naturally.
