A Gentle, Root-Cause Approach to IBS, Bloating & Gut Health
Digestive issues are something I see so often in clinic - and something I understand deeply, both professionally and personally.
Bloating that makes you feel uncomfortable in your own body.
Unpredictable digestion that affects your plans, your confidence, your ease.
The quiet stress that builds when your gut just doesn’t feel “right.”
Whether it’s diagnosed IBS, ongoing bloating, food sensitivities, or a general feeling of heaviness and discomfort — these symptoms are never just physical.
They’re your body trying to communicate.
My Personal Connection to Gut Health
Before becoming a practitioner, I experienced my own journey with digestive health after being diagnosed with Coeliac disease.
Food - something that’s meant to be joyful, social, and nourishing - became complicated and something that seemed highly stressful.
I often felt like “the difficult one,” the one asking questions, checking ingredients, feeling slightly outside of the moment.
Over time, this didn’t just affect my digestion - it affected my relationship with food, my nervous system, and my sense of ease in my body.
This is a huge part of why I do the work I do today.
Because I know how deeply gut health impacts everything.
How Acupuncture Views Digestive Issues
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, digestion is seen as the centre of energy production in the body.
When the digestive system is supported and balanced, everything else flows more smoothly - energy, mood, hormones, immunity.
When it’s out of balance, you might experience:
Bloating or distension
IBS symptoms (constipation, diarrhoea, or both)
Food sensitivities
Fatigue after eating
Brain fog
Irregular appetite
Anxiety linked to digestion
Rather than isolating symptoms, acupuncture looks at patterns within the body.
For example:
Stagnation → bloating, fullness, discomfort
Deficiency → fatigue, loose stools, low appetite
Heat or inflammation → urgency, irritation, sensitivity
Your treatment is always tailored to your unique pattern — not just your label.
The Gut–Nervous System Connection
One of the biggest things I work with in clinic is the connection between digestion and the nervous system.
When your body is in a constant state of stress (fight-or-flight), digestion is not the priority.
Blood flow shifts away from the gut.
The body becomes tense.
Absorption and movement slow down or become irregular.
This is where acupuncture can be incredibly powerful.
It helps guide the body into a parasympathetic state - the “rest and digest” mode where true healing can happen.
Clients often notice:
A softening in the belly
Less bloating after meals
More regular digestion
A calmer relationship with food
Improved sleep and reduced anxiety
Where Ayurveda & Marmapuncture Come In
Alongside acupuncture, my work is also influenced by Ayurvedic principles and my training in marmapuncture (ayurvedic acupuncture).
In Ayurveda, digestion is governed by Agni - your digestive fire.
When Agni is strong, food is properly broken down and absorbed.
When it’s weakened or disrupted, symptoms like bloating, heaviness, and sensitivity can arise.
Treatments may support:
Strengthening digestive fire
Reducing internal stagnation
Supporting gut-brain balance
Calming the system as a whole
This integrated approach allows us to work not just on symptoms, but on the deeper root of imbalance.
What Treatment Feels Like
Digestive acupuncture treatments are deeply calming.
Sessions may include:
Gentle body acupuncture
Abdominal points to support digestion
Auricular acupuncture to regulate the nervous system
Optional additions like Reiki or cupping, depending on your needs
Many patients leave feeling:
Lighter
More relaxed
Less “held” or "knotted" in the stomach area
More connected to their body
And over time, with consistency, this is where deeper shifts happen.
Why Consistency Matters
Digestive healing doesn’t usually come from a single session.
It’s about building momentum and allowing the body to gently re-learn balance.
This is why I often recommend a course of treatments - such as my 6-week programme - to:
Regulate the nervous system
Improve digestive function
Reduce inflammation and stagnation
Create lasting change rather than temporary relief
You Don’t Have to Live With It
So many people normalise digestive discomfort.
“I’ve always had a sensitive stomach.”
“It’s just IBS.”
“I just have to manage it.”
But your body isn’t working against you - it’s asking for support.
And when given the right environment, it wants to heal.
